What is the Swordsong Series?

An epic high-fantasy series by Brent Batla set in the realm of Alynthi. Book One, Rise of the Blademaster (first published 2021; revised edition 2026), follows Lauriel Valendril, a wood elf blade master. Book Two, Wrath of the Warlock (released September 23, 2026), follows Jexi Áerimiril, the realm’s first warlock.

Is Rise of the Blademaster high fantasy or epic fantasy?

Both. It is set in an entirely invented world with its own peoples, gods, and history, which makes it high fantasy, and its stakes reach across kingdoms and the fate of the realm, which makes it epic fantasy.

Who is Lauriel Valendril?

The heroine of Rise of the Blademaster. A wood elf who survived the destruction of her village, she was trained by the legendary swordsman Adamar of the Vendëum Andúlari and entrusted with the ancient blade Isilmwé.

Who is Jexi Áerimiril?

The heroine of Wrath of the Warlock: the realm’s first warlock, daughter of two worlds, and bearer of powers no mortal was meant to hold. Her search for the family she never knew drives Book Two.

What is the Swordsong reading order?

Book One is Rise of the Blademaster and Book Two is Wrath of the Warlock. Start with Book One; Book Two continues directly from it.

Is the Swordsong Series inspired by tabletop role-playing games?

Yes. Brent Batla began playing tabletop role-playing games at thirteen, became his group’s note-taker, and started turning their adventures into stories. Decades of that storytelling helped inspire the series, and this site offers companion tabletop adventure volumes set in Alynthi.

Does the series include elves, warlocks, legendary weapons, and other planes?

Yes: elven heroes and kingdoms, Jexi’s forbidden warlock magic, the legendary blade Isilmwé, and other planes of existence, including the fiends catalogued in the Demonicon.
